Mixed doubles (ミックス, Mikkusu, "Mix") is a 2017 Japanese romantic comedy film. The second co-project of director Junichi Ishikawa and screenwriter Ryota Kosawa after the 2015 film April Fools, it stars Yui Aragaki and Eita.[1] It was released October 21, 2017.[2]
Variety wrote that "First half is enjoyably upbeat and thoroughly modern in repping a middle-class Bombay couple having bedroom problems, but the second part goes for cliches combined with uneasy humor that mixes messages and fails to get, um, a rise".[1] Rediff wrote that "And it's definitely worth watching once".[2] India Today wrote that "The movie is elegantly designed, its exotic colours making urban angst look Wong-kar-wai moody".[3] Bollywood Hungama gave the film a rating of one-and-ahalf out of five and noted that "Director Rajat Kapoor gets it right in the first half, but not in the second".[4]
Mixed Doubles the movie
Some people feel that movies - as a piece of art - always have to challenge the status quo, which is quite unlikely when that piece of film is a romantic comedy in which the losers make the impossible possible. Well, though formulaic, MIKSU is a high octane, highly enjoyable comedy with a fantastic cast - and then there's suddenly Yu Aoi appearing onscreen as the evil hot chilly witch from China - and I wonder, how could anybody not love a beautiful and well-crafted film like this - which is, on top, highly entertaining.
My second-most favorite movie to come out of Japan this decade, after Wood Job!. Watched in the air because it was the cheapest option and boy, was I pleasantly bowled over! Glad nobody told that nice old couple that those cherry tomato mochi are kinda gross.
There's absolutely no cynicism, sarcasm or nihilism in this movie. It's 100% pure, naive goodness. It just wants you to feel good and does that with total predictability. You know exactly what's coming but you can't escape and it keeps beating you up until you smile like an idiot. And I guess, that's what I needed today. Wonderful.
Hindi movies do a lot of things very well, but frank investigations of mature sexual relationships aren't usually considered to be one of those things. It's a difficult subject for any movie - in any language - to handle well, with the right mixture of humor, sensitivity, and sexiness. Rajat Kapoor's Mixed Doubles, despite choosing the absurdly sensational device of spouse-swapping as its point of departure, manages reasonably well.
Most of the movie's laughs are of the awkward variety, where the audience laughs because of character's discomfort. I am not usually a fan of this brand of comedy - The Office is the canonical example, a show that I know is good but that I simply cannot watch. Here, though, it works, as a source both of comedy and of pathos. There is something ineffably sympathetic in Sunil's irrational obsession with the spouse-swapping scheme; I can identify with his restless pursuit of an outrageously bad idea. Ranvir Shorey's confused everyman performance helps keep him sympathetic - up to a point. Indeed, the deception with which Sunil convinces Malti to accede to the plan is the movie's only real wrong note.
The ending of Mixed Doubles doesn't offer much in the way of resolution, but that probably makes for a better film than any attempt to wrap the extreme emotions of Sunil and Malti's mutual misfires into a too-tidy package. Each of them has deceived and deeply wounded the other, and the damage of that is just too heavy to try to fix in one movie. The final scenes offer a gentle settling back into the quotidian domestic routine, suggesting that a peaceful resolution is possible for them, even if it hasn't yet happened by the time the credits roll.
To call California Suite uneven doesn't really begin to describe themovie's split personality. This latest Neil Simon-Herbert Rosscollaboration is by turns silly and thoughtful, tedious and charming, broad and delicate. It contains some of Simon's best writing as well ashis worst: childish jokes about vomiting coexist with wise statementsabout the art of marriage. So mixed are the returns on California Suitethat, if it were an election, one would insist on a recount.
The movie is an adaptation of Simon's Broadway hit, a collection of fourone-act plays set... There is a certain playfulness and innocence in the movie. But the second half does not do justice to the anticipation that the director builds up in the first half. The humour is well placed, though sometimes it goes overboard. The dialogues -- by Anurag Kashyap and Rajat Kapoor -- could have been catchier.
